San Miguel County is seeking proposals from planning firms, architects and /or other professionals with historic preservation experience to conduct a feasibility study for the acquisition, relocation and restoration of the historic Rio Grande Southern Placerville Depot in San Miguel County, Colorado. The successful applicant shall investigate compliance with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation, and consult on property ownership rights as well as the potential reconstruction and replacement activities required to relocate the existing depot structures to a location in Placerville, next to the historical railroad line (now State Highway 145) and as close as possible to its original location in Placerville, Colorado. Property ownership of the historical Placerville railroad depot parcel is unclear and is a complex situation between the Placerville Townsite Trust, the Rio Grande Southern Railroad, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and San Miguel County that will need to be sorted out for this project to proceed. Reconstruction and replacement of the RGS Placerville Depot to somewhere near its original location is a long-term goal of the San Miguel County Historical Commission. Preliminary discussions have been held with the Galloping Goose Historical Society, the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway Committee, the Placerville community and the Telluride Fire Protection District as owners of Galloping Goose engine #4, a historic railroad car which is currently on display at the County's Galloping Goose Park in Telluride during the summer months. The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time.
