Site work for a playground / park / athletic field in Gypsum, Colorado. Conceptual plans call for site work for a playground / park / athletic field.
This Request for Proposal (RFP) is being issued for an individual skatepark project. There will be one submission process and one interview panel to select a design consultant for this project. This project is a "skatepark" on a site approximately 10,000 square feet in size and designated for beginner, intermediate or expert levels. This project is a 9,000-to-11,000 square feet cast-in-place and/or shotcrete concrete skatepark facility. Our local skateboarding youth guide the vision for this project, and we seek to contract with a company that aligns with this community's goals and vision. We believe a well-designed skatepark is a great way to bring community members together in ways that might not otherwise occur. It's a place where mentorship can happen-where older skaters help younger skaters when these people wouldn't usually be together outside of a park. It's a place where younger people can look up to the older skaters, and if the skatepark has a friendly atmosphere, this can occur naturally. A skatepark with this vibe is something that our community could benefit from immensely. Below you will see an aerial view of our current skatepark that does not meet the needs of our community. Other local skateparks, such as the one in Edwards, CO, have a much better design and generally have a nice and friendly vibe, something that does not exist at the Gypsum skatepark. The current Gypsum skatepark is not nearly as respected by the user base and is often subject to vandalism or a lack of care. The atmosphere at the current skatepark in Gypsum tends to scare people away, skaters and other people in the community alike. A better-designed, new and clean skatepark will generate more respect for the park and create a friendlier place where youth can hang out and have fun without worrying about something bad happening. One of the main problems with the current Gypsum skatepark design is the amount of space taken up by unskatable features and a large bowl with no flow. This poor design results in less efficient use of the park, where only a fraction of the park is skatable. Often skaters end up skating in the small areas of flat ground surrounding the bowl rather than using the main features, which serve only to take up space. Another issue with the existing Gypsum skatepark is the lack of seating areas. Without benches or shade structures, kids and parents end up sitting on the ledges and rims of the bowl and are in the way of those using the skatepark. Our local youth would like the new skatepark to be a street-style skatepark since it is most inclusive and usable by most skateboarders, bikers, scooters, rollerbladers, etc. This type of skatepark is also most appealing to beginners, allowing more people to pick up the hobby. Although skateboarding seems to be progressing toward this street-style trend, we would still like some transition/flow skateboarding features included in the new skatepark design. Specific skatepark features we'd like the new design to include are: o flat ground area (this is good for beginners and can be enjoyed by all skill levels) o box similar to the Edwards, CO skatepark box (one that has coping and can be used as a manual pad) o flat bar (circle) o quarter pipe on one side of the park (this can add flow and transition to the park) o hip o mellow stair set (4 stairs) o mellow hubba o mini ramp o euro gap o A-frame Negotiations to proceed promptly upon notice in preparation for a July and August 2022 community meetings. The Town of Gypsum reserves sole discretion to change these dates. Prospective candidates will be notified of any changes. The Town reserves the right to act in its best interest and may terminate, modify, or suspend the process, reject any or all submittals, modify the terms and conditions of this selection process and/or waive informalities of any submission. The Method of Contractor Selection has not been determined at this Time.
