PURPOSE: The Virginia Department of Transportation (herein referred to as "VDOT") is soliciting bids from qualified firms to provide Aluminum Box Culvert with Structural Plate Headwall and the On-Site Field Assembly by awarded contractor located on Route 722 (Glade Road) in Nelson County, Virginia. QUESTIONS REGARDING THIS INVITATION FOR BID: Any questions regarding this invitation for bid shall be addressed to Robert Dowdle at Robert.Dowdle@VDOT.virginia.gov. The issuing office shall determine whether any addendum should be issued as a result of any questions or other matters raised. Provide questions no later than 5:00 PM on October 1, 2022. DESCRIPTION: Aluminum Box Culvert with Structural Plate Headwall and the On-Site Field Assembly by awarded contractor located on Route 722 (Glade Road) in Nelson County, Virginia. Structure Data: Number of barrels: 1 Culvert size: 10'-0" span x 4'-10" rise Culvert length: 40'-6" Skew: 100 Degrees The contractor shall furnish and deliver Aluminum Box Culvert with Structural Plate Headwalls and all incidental components per attached drawings (Attachment A) in accordance with the referenced sections of the Virginia Department of Transportation 2020 Road and Bridge Specifications or most current edition and notes below. Aluminum Structural Plate Headwall 1. Aluminum structural plate headwalls shall conform to the latest requirements of AASHTO M219 or ASTM B746 with a minimum thickness of 0.200". 2. Headwalls may incorporate the full variety of shapes and sizes available in corrugated metal pipe and structural plate culverts (pipe, arch pipe, arch, box culvert, et al). Additionally, headwalls may be equipped with wingwalls of the same design and material. All headwalls will be designed by a duly licensed and registered Virginia Professional Engineer who will provide sealed drawings and calculations. 3. The headwall manufacturer shall provide construction supervision for the assembly, installation, and backfill of the headwall. The supervisor shall have a minimum of 2 years' onsite experience in aluminum headwall installations. 4. A culvert stub shall be integral with the headwall by means of a full periphery weld on both the interior and exterior of their junction. The headwall is properly placed at the design elevation by ensuring the stub is placed at grade for the culvert crossing. 5. All steel components (nuts, bolts, tie back rods) shall have a hot-dipped galvanized coating. 6. As a matter of expedience and to the extent practical, the headwall-culvert system shall be delivered from the manufacturer, completely assembled with the conduit fully welded to the headwall inside and out along the conduits full periphery. All other headwall items such as wale beams & wale nuts, reinforcing ribs, top caps, and any other item associated with the headwall shall be shop assembled and delivered to the jobsite, ready for installation. VDOT at its sole discretion will have the right to inspect the headwall and associated materials for compliance with this portion of the specification and shall have the right to reject any material that it deems to not be in compliance. It will be the supplier's responsibility at no additional cost to VDOT to provide materials that are in compliance with this specification. 7. Supplier shall provide all necessary materials including the headwall, conduit, wale beams, top cap, deadman anchors, reinforcing ribs, threaded rods, bolts and nuts, and any other items incidental to proper design and construction. Headwall manufacturer shall also provide all necessary hand tools for proper assembly and installation.
