The City of Kelowna is the registered owner of 18 dams. The dams are classified according to their hazard consequence and include four low, five high, two very high, three significant and one extremes. Two dams are considered minor while one is not currently registered. The dams are typically purposed for non-potable (irrigation) water supply or stormwater management. The dams range in age with some above 50 years old. Past dam safety reviews have identified that a significant amount of work is required on some of the structures. The City performs its surveillance according to provincial regulations. Maintenance activities are based on surveillance and the annual inspection process. As part of this process, the City intends to contract out the annual inspections and Dam Safety Reviews. The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time.
