The Visitor Center (VC) will serve a variety of functions for both the visitors and the infrastructure of the Museum, as well as provide added sustainability to the Museum's fiscal operations. The current VC located on W. 57th was built in the 1970's and originally served as a souvenir and craft shop. Called "The Trading Post," it has been retrofitted several times over the last 40 years to provide various functions, which are: visitor services desk, gift shop, public restroom (single), one-room Museum exhibit, staff offices (for 8), and special artifact collection storage. Once the town is completed, the building will be retrofitted to be used solely for much needed collections storage. Most retrofitting will be in the form of removing partition walls, and adding shelving and light-blocking shades. The funding source for this project will be a Special Revenue fund. The project is included in the City of Shawnee 2022-2032 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). As of February 14, 2023, further details regarding design and construction have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
