1. The Roswell Air Center, formerly Walker AFB, is a large facility with a 4000-acre airport, approximately 375 acres outside the airport, 33 buildings and 25 hangars. The main runway is 13,000 feet long and 150 feet wide, stressed to carry almost any size aircraft. Revenue is derived from operational fees (landing, fuel flow, airport use, etc.), building leases, land leases, aircraft storage, water sales and passenger facility charges. The airport can be characterized as an industrial airport with commercial passenger service. 2. There are four aircraft maintenance companies as well as an aircraft painting company located at the Air Center. These, along with a few other non-aviation businesses provide approximately 1000 jobs for the Roswell community. Eastern New Mexico University has a campus next to the airport with an aviation program focused on aviation maintenance. 3. There is enormous room for growth at this facility. It may be the best job growth opportunity in Southeast New Mexico. As such, it is important to the city and the airport team to develop this asset into a job-creating asset that generates economic development for Roswell/Chavez County.
