Renovation of a mixed-use development in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a museum.

The Visitor Center (VC) will serve a variety of functions for both the visitors and the infrastructure of the Museum, as well as provide added sustainability to the Museum’s fiscal operations. The current VC located on W. 57th was built in the 1970’s and originally served as a souvenir and craft shop. Called “The Trading Post,” it has been retrofitted several times over the last 40 years to provide various functions, which are: visitor services desk, gift shop, public restroom (single), one-room Museum exhibit, staff offices (for 8), and special artifact collection storage. Once the town is completed, the building will be retrofitted to be used solely for much needed collections storage. Most retrofitting will be in the form of removing partition walls and adding shelving and light-blocking shades. The funding source for this project will be a Special Revenue fund. Project is in City of Shawnee - Procurement capital budget FY 2024-2033. As of October 3, 2024, project is funded for January 1, 2025-December 31, 2025. Per owner, there are no current updates on this project. Design is scheduled to begin sometime next year but no designer has been hired yet. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
