This project is included in the City of Framingham fiscal years 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of October 23, 2023, further details regarding design and construction have not been identified. A firm timeline for construction has not been established. A detailed scope has not yet been released. Many of Framingham`s tennis and basketball courts were constructed between the 1990`s and early 2000`s using asphalt. Well-built and maintained asphalt courts typically begin showing degradation after 8-10 years, with an anticipated useful life of approximately 12-20 years before conditions require full replacement. Through a consistent annual crack-sealing and seal-coating program, the department has extended the safe and playable useful life of these courts for several years. As a result of their age and New England weather, the underlying base and asphalt playing surface at many locations are compromised to the point that requires removal and reconstruction. As we replace existing courts, we are proposing the reconstruction of these courts using post-tensioned concrete, which was recently used for the reconstruction of the courts at Winch Park. Post-tensioned concrete provides significantly improved durability of the playing surface, a 25- year warranty against structural failure, and an anticipated useful life expectancy of several additional years. During these reconstruction projects, we will also address ADA accessibility and assess the feasibility of upgrading court lighting to energy-efficient LED. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
