The existing Winkler Centennial Arena was built in 1967 and has a building area of around 3,440 sm / 37,028 sf. The primary structural and building envelope system of the existing arena is a prefabricated "Corespan" system consisting of deeply corrugated metal panels spanning the full height of the walls. The roof assembly is the same Corespan system, supported with steel trusses, that are encompassed with a flat bottom cord and curved top cord. The east end of the facility has a two-story component comprising of the main entrance/lobby, washrooms, offices, concessions, kitchen, arena box seating and general hall area. The Centennial Arena area consists of the main playing ice surface, bleachers and dressing rooms, mechanical room, and Zamboni storage. The Centennial Arena is connected to the Meridian Exhibition Centre and to a separate building containing the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) Winkler Flyers training and dressing rooms. The general project scope includes the following: 1. Removal of the existing ice plant and tying the Centennial Arena into the new highly efficient consolidated twin pad ice plant system in the Meridian Exhibition Centre. 2. Removal of the existing boards, concrete slabs, bleachers, inaccessible change rooms/washrooms and lobby areas and replacement with new accessible viewing, modern inclusive change facilities, concessions, food services areas, multi-use spaces, sledge hockey dasher boards, and benches and arena seating. 3. General upgrades to the facility to improve energy efficiency; to bring the 55-year- old facility up to current codes and standards and address the building condition assessment (BCA) issues identified. The Project shall be designed and constructed, following best practice design strategies with a focus on environmentally friendly initiatives and energy efficiency to minimize operational costs to align with the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program (GICB). *Funding: Federal $8 million; Provincial $3.1 million; City $12.6 million. **The City of Winkler has signed a Letter of Intent with Bockstael Construction. Demolition to commence shortly & construction will be completed by the end of 2025.
