The Public Works Department is charged with administering the City’s Street and other related Capital Improvement Projects. This project involves a section of West main Street (SR 555) located just west of downtown New Britain, and as such this section of road is an important part of gate way into the downtown. The project would significantly improve the consuming intersection alignment of West main Street, Curtis Street, and Vine Street, and also address several wide driveway curb cuts, the lack of curb reveal, and non-conforming driveway aprons and snow shelves. The project also adds street trees along this stretch of road that along with aesthetic benefits also serve to help calm traffic speeds. These improvements would greatly increase pedestrian, vehicular traffic, and bicycle safety along with major improvements to the aesthetics. Additionally, the streetscape and storefront area is improved for local businesses and a new green space is provide for the neighborhood. This section of West Main street was selected because it provides a good example of the typical issues faced on state roads, and because the improvements identified in this small project would have a major impact in this area. As of November 30, 2023, this project is included in the City of New Britain's Fiscal Year 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and funding for construction is allotted for FY 2028. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
