The Police Department moved into its present location in 1987 and is utilized by a staff of 25 full-time police officers and support staff. The entire facility is 22,430 square feet and was built in 1959. The department also shares the facility with the Black Mountain Fire Department. The facility is showing structural issues. The Police Department has run out of operating space within the current facility The department needs a complete remodel to be able to operate and function at a high service level. The current facility lacks adequate evidence space, office space, equipment storage space and IT capability for a modern Police Department servicing a town the size of Black Mountain.Town staff are currently working on facilities needs assessments which will be presented to Council to inform future facility needs. A placeholder of approximately $8.5M has been included in future capital for the construction of a new facility. As of December 14, 2023, this project is included in the Town of Black Mountain's FY23-24 - FY 27-28 and funding is allotted for future years beyond FY 27-28. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
