UPDATE : Smart22 Western Branch Rails to Trails Phase 2 Facilities for Pedestrians and Bicycles Description FROM: Gum Road TO: Taylor Rd. Project is in Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT capital budget fy 2026-2031 CIP _______________________________________________________________________________________ This is a VDOT-funded project. Phase 2 of the Western Branch Trail project will fund construction of a 10-foot-wide multi-use path connecting the completed Phase I portion of the project to the future Phase III of the project (Taylor Rd to Suffolk Line). The project limits are from Dordon Street to Taylor Road. The multi-use trail consists of a single ten-foot wide asphalt surface. The existing railroad ballast will be stabilized and the asphalt surface will be constructed directly on top. Safety amenities include benches, bike racks, tire pumping/bicycle repair stations and kiosks. Gravel shoulders and landscape barriers will provide additional safety to bicyclists. Connection to Peppercorn Drive and Arboretum Trail will allow for neighborhood access. This project is included in the city’s 2024-2028 Capital Improvement Plan. As of March 20, 2024, project design is scheduled to be completed in Winter 2024. Bidding process is to start in Spring 2024 and construction starting in Summer 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
