Westside Irrigation Rehabilitation Project (WIP). The project is a multi-generational, visionary large-scale conceptual irrigation project with potential for up to 340,000 acres of irrigation supplied from Lake Diefenbaker. Located in south-central Saskatchewan, the project area is bounded by Lake Diefenbaker, the South Saskatchewan River to the east and the North Saskatchewan. Phase 1 of the larger WIP project, is consistent with the original vision from the 1960's and located between Lake Diefenbaker and the Ardath-Swanson area north-east of the Conquest Reservoir. This infrastructure was partially completed in the 1970s. The existing works are still somewhat used by the Macrorie Irrigation District; however, robust rehabilitation and some expansion of the existing infrastructure is expected to be required. It is estimated that as a result of the future rehabilitation and expansion of this existing infrastructure, up to 90,000 acres of irrigation potential will be provided. TIMELINE: Request for Proposals from engineering consultants has been awarded to Prairie Engineering Partners (joint venture comprised of Stantec & MPE Engineering Ltd.). Fieldwork and design of the project to commence shortly. The scope of the design study is limited to the optimization of existing and development of new infrastructure with anticipated potential to provide approximately 90,000 irrigable acres and extends from Lake Diefenbaker to the Ardath-Swanson area. This design effort will complete the planning, technical, and financial analyses required to establish and execute a sound implementation plan for the Project for use by decision-makers as the Project moves forward.
