In November 2014 voters approved a pavement sales tax of three-eighths of one percent (3/8) with a portion of the tax dedicated to upgrading and improving older streets with curbs, sidewalks, drainage, lighting. A citizen task force was put together to rank streets based on 7 distinct criteria. So far 2 projects have been completed (Flint Street - Johnson to 62nd Terrace and 60th Street - Flint to Nieman) with a third in construction (Goddard Street - 55th to Johnson Drive). The eligible streets are re-evaluated periodically. This segment of W 69th Street is a flat, narrow ditch section street lacking sidewalk, street lighting, and proper drainage facilities. The improvements involve complete removal and replacement of the existing street to include grading, widening, curb, sidewalk/ADA ramps, storm drainage facilities, pavement markings, and LED streetlight luminaires. The Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for FY 2025-2029 was heard for the last time before being approved by the Board of Shawnee City Commission at a meeting held on Monday, June 17. Many projects that have been on citizens’ minds were addressed in the plan, and they are now on a timeline. The largest budgeted projects are set to begin under the FY 2025 budget. As of June 25, 2024, project is funded for construction starting January 1, 2025 and completed December 31, 2026. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
