The West District Energy Plant (WDEP) Colorado Emissions Compliance Project is a CU Boulder capital renewal project. WDEP, formally known as the "Powerhouse," was built in 1909 and has undergone several renovations with different configurations of district energy equipment since its original construction. The plant is a combined heat and power (CHP) plant connected to a conventional heating and cooling plant that produces the majority of heating, cooling, and power for the main campus and power to most buildings on the east campus. The heat-generating equipment in the WDEP consists of dual fuel-fired (natural gas and oil) steam boilers (vintage 1958 and 1966) and combustion turbine generators (CTGs, vintage 1991) that produce heat and power for the campus.
