In addition, the Project will install high visibility crosswalks, street lighting, and intersection speed tables throughout the Project area. The San Andreas Pope Street and Safe Routes to School Project (the Project) will provide safe bicycle and pedestrian connections through the main central residential neighborhood in San Andreas and to the major destinations in town such as the San Andreas Elementary School, Calaveras High School, Main Street shops, Mark Twain Hospital and Medical Center, Calaveras Health and Human Services, DMV, County Central Library, and the Calaveras County Government Center. The Project area includes Main Street, Pope Street, Lewis Avenue, California Street, Treat Avenue, and Neilson Road within the unincorporated community of San Andreas. The overall Project goals are to increase mobility and accessibility for all San Andreas residents and visitors by improving comfort and safety for non-motorized users and connecting key destinations within San Andreas. The Project aligns with State and national goals to decrease reliance on motorized vehicle travel, increase air quality, and the overall health of San Andreas by increasing safety for pedestrians and cyclists and encouraging a walkable and bikeable community. Additionally, the Project will provide access for cyclists and pedestrians to major destinations and transit services for work, commerce, education, and recreation.
