Friends of the Winooski River (FWR) is requesting that engineers licensed to practice in the State of Vermont submit proposals for the development of a Final Design for the replacement of a culvert where Mitchell Road crosses Gunners Brook in Barre Town. The purpose of this project is to replace an undersized culvert, correct structural deficiencies, improve stream geomorphic compatibility, and restore passage of all life stages of Eastern Brook trout and other aquatic species. July 24, 2024 Contractors notified December 1, 2024 Preliminary design phase completed March 1, 2025 Final Design phase completed Qualified disadvantaged (DBE) and women-owned (WBE) businesses are encouraged to submit proposals. The purpose of this project is to replace an undersized (60% of bankfull width) and perched (1.2') culvert in Gunners Brook to correct structural deficiencies and restore passage of all life stages of Eastern Brook trout and other aquatic species. The road (class 3) and culvert are owned by the Town of Barre Town. Friends of the Winooski River seeks proposals to complete a 30% design, and subsequent 100% design. Culvert and Site Description The culvert (SGAID 401202000312021) is located on Mitchell Road adjacent to its intersection of Plainfield Brook Road (Lat: 44.23036 N, Lon: 72.47009W). The culvert is currently a ~ 100'x 7' steel corrugated pipe with concrete abutments. This is 60% of the measured 11' bankfull width of the channel. It has subsequently scoured the outlet creating a 1.2' free fall. It sits under a town owned class 3 road. The method of Contractor Selection has not been Determined at this time.
