In general, the work consists of interior remodeling of two (2) existing laboratory spaces to BSL-2 compliant laboratories on the 5th floor of the existing 8-floor level, 1966 addition of the Sewell Social Sciences building on the UW-Madison campus. Project involves the renovation of rooms 5415 (~366 sf) and 5447B (~300 sf) to make the new BSL-2 lab spaces. This includes the removal and reconfiguration of existing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in the project area, the selective demolition of existing doors in metal framed partitions, and openings at a CMU shaft to accommodate new building compressed air piping and exhaust ductwork. General Prime Contractor (GPC) will be required to coordinate utility disconnections to existing laboratory equipment to enable abatement work by Owner's abatement contractor which includes, but not limited to, the existing laboratory casework, counters, flooring, lighting, insulated pipe fitting materials, and above ceiling ductwork seam materials. Location Madison WI. Adjacent spaces impacted by the BSL-2 laboratory project area includes the corridor outside the renovated labs and two (2) existing laboratories: 5439 (~355 sf) and 5477 (~354 sf). Both adjacent labs will require new suspended acoustical grid ceilings. Laboratory 5477 will have existing lighting and mechanical diffusers reinstalled following above ceiling work while laboratory 5439 will require new lighting and mechanical diffusers. New laboratory space work will consist of patched and painted existing stud partitions with new access controlled hollow metal frames and wood doors, new vinyl composition flooring with resilient wall base. There will be new painted metal laboratory casework with epoxy resin countertops and lab sinks. There will be a combination of CFCI and OFCI laboratory equipment requiring utility and service connections including new fume hoods. Ceilings will be suspended acoustical grid with new and rerouted ductwork above, and new lay-in grills and diffusers. A new roof mounted centrifugal exhaust fan will be required with associated ductwork routed through an existing shaft. Constant volume air terminals with reheat coils will be added to the existing air handling system to supply the laboratories. The existing DDC system within the building will be extended with a new supervisory controller to control the new mechanical equipment. Electrical work will include new lighting and electrical power throughout both laboratories with replacement of panels in framed walls. Fire alarm, telecom and access control will be extended from existing building systems to support the labs. Project area and adjacent impacted spaces will all require new sprinklered fire protection extended from a riser located at a nearby egress stair.
