Currituck Hangar for Elizabeth City State University School of Aviation The ECSU Hangar Facility at Currituck County Regional Airport will supplement the courses being taught at the Aviation School on campus and offer students real-world flight training with university instructors. The hangar facility will be constructed on new land, developed on the south side of the Currituck County Regional Airport. The facility will be comprised of (2) hangars and (1) educational/office building. The storage hangar will be located on the northern portion of the site and will be a standalone hangar to be used by ECSU and potentially leased for private aircraft storage. The maintenance hangar and office component will be located on the southern portion of the site and be dedicated solely to ECSU student and faculty use. All three structures will be constructed as pre-engineered metal buildings (PEMB). The office space will contain a series of offices to be used by ECSU staff, a waiting /lounge area, restrooms, and briefing rooms to be used by students and instructors for pre and post flight briefings. A secure airfield perimeter fences will separate the parking area from the airfield and access control doors into the office building will maintain a secure perimeter. The proposed ECSU School of Aviation building is designed as a multi-story, non-separated mixed occupancy building of approximately 56,000 sf. This facility is comprised of two generally stand-alone buildings, connected on the second floor by a sky bridge that spans over existing sub-grade water lines and utility vaults. The northern building, dedicated to housing the majority of lab/maker spaces and hands-on training areas, consists of two floors totaling approximately 20,000 sf of the total building area. The southern building contains more traditional academic program elements such as classrooms, student lounge, faculty offices, and amenity spaces with a two-story atrium.
