(1) - Route 124, Bridges Over Passaic River (Design B-1 Level B, E-3 Level A, E-4 Level A, H-1 Level A, H-3 Level A) Location(s) Essex, New Jersey Morris, New Jersey Union, New Jersey The project on Route 124 (MP 7.34) at the intersection of Chatham Borough in Morris County, Millburn Township in Essex County, and the City of Summit in Union County, involves replacing the bridge decks of the Twin Bridges, Structure No. 1406-157 (Eastbound) and Structure No. 1406-158 (Westbound), built in 1971. These single-span steel girder bridges, each with a 26-foot lane, safety walk, and sidewalk, are classified as "Structurally Deficient" due to poor deck conditions, including spalling and exposed reinforcement and "Functionally Obsolete" due to their intolerable deck geometry. Recent inspections rated the overall superstructure and substructure condition as "satisfactory". The Preliminary Preferred Alternative will utilize cast-in-place construction, with superstructure and substructure repairs with bearing replacement using laminated elastomeric bearings and erection of a supplemental fascia girder, and complete blasting and painting. Other structural repairs will include repairs for cracked and delaminated concrete in the abutment and retaining walls.
