Demolition, site work, paving and new construction of a bridge / tunnel in Springfield, New Jersey. Working plans call for the demolition of a bridge / tunnel; for the construction of a bridge / tunnel; for site work for a bridge / tunnel; and for paving for a bridge / tunnel.
Initiated by the Bridge Management System, this project will replace the structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge, built in 1872. The bridge also has flooding problems. The project will provide a 60’ precast arch bridge with stone masonry facade. Flooding mitigation is inherent in the structural alternative, which will result in decreased flood levels and arch barrel clogging at the structure. In terms of community and environment, the historic and architectural features are fully preserved. County : Union Municipality: Springfield Twp Mileposts: 0.38 As of July 18 , 2025, the project is in Final Planning status. Anticipated letting Year is 2025. NJDOT -Route 82, Rahway River Bridge *Project information has been obtained through a public state transportation improvement plan (STIP). A STIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the STIP often evolves based on funding availability.
