This project will complete the Big Sioux River levee by extending the levee north approximately 1,000-feet. The City utilizes sandbag levees to provide flood management in the area just upstream of a south segment of the levee. This measure of flood protection has been inadequate and undesirable therefore, the levee extension is proposed to replace the temporary sandbag levee system. The project will entail the purchasing of three homes along River Drive, relocating the homeowners, demolishing the homes, and constructing the new levee. This project will require permitting from United States Army Corps of Engineers for the levee improvements along with permitting coordination with the State of South Dakota. Upon completion of the project and a post-construction survey, FEMA Final Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) will be submitted. This project is included in the City's 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
