Remington Hernandez/Pioneer BIG RAPIDS — Work will be done on multiple streets in Big Rapids following approval of a bid by the city commission, Monday, July 21. Rieth-Riley Construction will resurface the 1200-1400 blocks of Darwin Avenue, 300-600 blocks of Marion Avenue, 100 block of Chestnut Avenue and the 100-200 blocks of Mitchell Creek Court. The 500 block of Sanborn Avenue will be resurfaced, as well, but curbs are to be added on top of that. Rieth-Riley was the only company to place a bid, worth $306,802.25. The commission approved the bid unanimously, but Mayor Fred Guenther did ask Public Works Director Heather Bowman why there was only a single bid. Bowman, who said the approved bid was a good one, noted the city did submit a request for a bid to another company, but they chose not to submit one. Rieth-Riley is experiencing some issues related to their Big Rapids facility, Bowman said, but the company plans to work through it. The exact dates of construction are yet to be announced. As it stands, Rieth-Riley plans to have the work on Sanborn Avenue complete by the start of the school year, as Brookside Elementary sits at the end of the street. The rest of the projects are planned to begin toward the end of September or in early October. "They'll abide by their deadline which is November 1," Bowman said.
