https://www.newsobserver.com/news/article312690094.html Neill Construction in Hickory is likely to be the company to build the new Burke County school system central office. ____________ As of October 9, 2025, per addendum 6, the bid date and opening have been extended from October 14, 2025. This two-phase project involves the conversion of a former one story 32,000 SF community services building into new central administrative offices for the Burke County Public Schools. Phase One of the project, which was bid in the spring of 2025 and involves selective demolitions of the former Burke United Ministries Building, is currently underway and slated for completion on or before September 28, 2025. This scope consists of the demolition, removal, and disposal of existing interior building elements, including but not limited to partition walls, doors, frames, acoustical ceiling systems and grids, floor finishes, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical removals. The majority of this work will be completed, and existing conditions associated with the main project work scope will be visible to bidders at the time of the site pre-bid. The bid also includes two large bid alternates: one related to the extension of an onsite through-roadway, and the second, renovations to approximately 4,800 SF to create a function and training center. The Burke County Public Schools will procure movable furnishings and data/security systems on separate contracts outside of this package. There is extensive site reconstruction to parking and utilities with redefinition, milling, and re-pavement of the existing parking areas, storm water management, along with extensive landscaping. Construction is expected to begin on or before October 20th, 2025, with completion targeted on or before July 1, 2026. This building is presently under roof and enclosed, affording opportunities for interior winter work. The anticipated bid award is scheduled for October 6th , 2025.
