This project will extend the SMART Pathway-an envisioned 71-mile route running alongside SMART’s rail line between Larkspur and Cloverdale-roughly 500 south from its current terminus at Lakeville Street to the intersection of North Water Street and Oak Street, allowing people to travel between the SMART Pathway and downtown without having to walk or bike on busy nearby streets. The pathway will provide a short, but critical extension to a 4.5-mile segment of the SMART Pathway that currently runs from Lakeville Street to Penngrove. In addition to connecting Sonoma and Marin Counties, the SMART Pathway is considered the southern portion of the Great Redwood Trail, an envisioned 307-mile route along California's North Coast linking the San Francisco and Humboldt Bays. This project will be constructed within SMART's right-of-way and in partnership with SMART. Funding sources are undetermined, though it is expected to be competitive for grant funding given its location and benefits As of Sept 3, 2025, this project is included in the City's 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
