The City of Bowie Sewer system was installed in the 1960s. The majority of the pipe is terra-cotta, with some cast iron. The sewer line lifecycle is 50 to 100 years. Its line integrity depends on how the pipe was originally installed, what's happened to the ground over time, and what surrounds the sewer mains. Sewers are designed to collect wastewater from intended sources and convey it downstream. Due to sewer defects resulting from system aging and structural failure, extraneous water enters the system. These defects include conditions like broken pipe, leaking joints, defective manholes and root infiltration. The cost of these defects can be enormous. Treatment of the extraneous water and back up of the sewer main create extra maintenance and backups in homes and hardships to homeowners and claims to the City for cleanup. The project is included in the City's 2026-2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
