West Avenue Annex lies just east of the campus in downtown Fayetteville. The building was constructed in 1925 as a garment factory for Ely & Walker Dry Goods of St. Louis, Missouri after a campaign by a Fayetteville citizens committee succeeded in funding the project. The building changed use and ownership several times after that, and was finally donated to the university in August 1957 by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce with the stipulation that if the building ceases to be used by the university it will revert to ownership of the chamber or its successors. Since that time, it has housed varying uses, including the General Extension Department, Industrial Engineering, and the Archeological Survey, among others. The building currently houses offices for several groups that do not have permanent space on the main campus. In 2012, the university commissioned a programming and code study to determine how to use the space more efficiently, and what renovations would be necessary to bring life safety and other building systems into conformance with current codes. Funding this request would allow the university to complete the total renovation of the building, including new building systems and life safety improvements. The building will become a home for service units that do not need a direct presence in the central campus, thus freeing up space for academic uses. The project is included in the State's 2025-2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of February 6, 2026, this project is in the design phase. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
