As of May 18th, 2026, this project has not been awarded and has been put on hold until next fall or spring. Sealed requests for proposals are being sought for a large tree planting program funded by the USDA Forest Service Inflation Reduction Act-Urban and Community Grant awarded to the City. Proposals are to supply, plant, mulch, water, and guarantee a specific list of 51 trees in municipal right-of-ways (parkways/tree lawns) during the spring. The contractor will provide all materials, equipment, and labor required for planting and must supply a valid Indiana Department of Agriculture Nurseryman Certificate for the nursery or nurseries providing the trees. Trees must be locally grown within 150 miles of Michigan City, IN, unless otherwise approved by the Consulting City Forester or a city representative. Lump sum pricing is to be provided by bidders. The Board of Works reserves the right to reject any and all proposals, waive technicalities, and accept the proposal deemed to be in the City's best interest. The contractor will be responsible for arranging the underground utility locate . Individual tree planting locations will be marked in white paint by the City just prior to the utility locate call . Detailed maps and lists of the locations and required species will be provided to the selected contractor as Excel Worklists , along with hardcopy , .pdf , and .kml maps for use on Google Earth . The City reserves the right to change any of the specific planting locations throughout the project .
