Sonoma Water's Wohler Facility is equipped with three (3) 2.0-megawatt standby generators that provide critical backup power to both the Wohler and Mirabel facilities during utility outages. These generators, now approximately 25 years old, have played a vital role in maintaining operational continuity through numerous Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) events, wildfires, and other emergency power. In 2021, the generator system failed during a utility outage. Troubleshooting revealed that the failure was due to obsolete synchronization controls, which are no longer supported by the manufacturer. Fortunately, Sonoma Water had spare components available, enabling a temporary repair. However, this incident highlighted the need for a long-term solution to ensure the reliability of the backup power system. To maintain the operational integrity of these critical assets, Sonoma Water plans to upgrade the control systems for all three generators. This upgrade will replace outdated synchronization and control components with modern, supported systems, improve reliability, maintainability, and future serviceability of the generators, extend the useful life of the existing generator units, provide a cost-effective alternative to full generator replacement, which would be significantly more expensive and time-intensive. The project is included in the County's 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
