Work consists of entry courtyard improvements within the City of Topeka right-of-way and on National Park Service property at Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park. The project includes removal and replacement of existing concrete courtyard paving and stairs with new concrete paving and stairs constructed in the same layout and historic jointing pattern as existing, while reconfiguring longitudinal and cross slopes to meet Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) accessibility requirements. Site grading will be performed to relocate the existing stormwater low point from the courtyard to the adjacent turf grass lawn, with drainage directed to a new aggregate stormwater storage chamber. During higher-intensity rainfall events, overflow will be graded to discharge onto the right-of-way sidewalk and conveyed to Monroe Street through a new concrete curb ramp that connects to the existing pedestrian loading zone and city storm sewer system. Additional work includes installation of new concrete pavement, ABA curb ramps and detectable warning panels, new concrete stairs and ornamental handrails, curb and gutter, aggregate subbase, excavation and haul-off, topsoil stripping and respreading, turf grass sod installation, tree protection fencing, erosion control measures, stormwater storage aggregate with filter fabric, relocation and reinstallation of select site furnishings and door hardware, and implementation of traffic control measures.
