Dare County, North Carolina, in conjunction with the Towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills, plans to utilize sand from three borrow areas located offshore of the Towns of Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills and one borrow area located north of the Town of Duck to construct four proposed beach nourishment projects within the Towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills. The project will be bid under one contract. Several scenarios are being considered for each of the four Towns, with a total volume for the collective project ranging between 2.3 million cubic yards and 3.1 million cubic yards. Current volume ranges for each town are: Town of Duck: approximately 1.6 miles of beach, 623,700 to 830,600 cubic yards. Town of Southern Shores: approximately 4.1 miles, 375,000 to 466,800 cubic yards. Town of Kitty Hawk: approximately 4.0 miles, 721,600 to 1,010,200 cubic yards. Town of Kill Devil Hills: approximately 2.7 miles, 636,200 to 859,300 cubic yards. Borrow area data (geotechnical and bathymetric) and topo/bathy data for the beaches are being made available to interested contractors in advance to facilitate development of dredge plans. This data is intended to assist in evaluating anticipated construction means, methods, and associated costs for the proposed beach renourishment event. A more refined range of potential project volumes will be provided at the time the project is formally advertised for bids.
