The Town of Castine recently completed a plan to reinforce the sheet piling system at the Castine Town Dock. The current sheet piling system is 24 years old in one portion of the dock and 34 years old at the other end. The project area encompasses roughly 247 lineal feet of sheet piling along with the area that will need to be excavated behind the piling. The bulkhead has been maintained historically with periodic recoating of rusted areas and the replacement ofsacrificial anodes. At present approximately 10% of the bulkhead's surface coating is gone and will require recoating. The steel in the bulkhead has thinned from 3/8" original thickness to approximately %", or 30% loss ofthickness. The bottom of the bulkhead at the mudline is in apparent good condition with no holed areas found. The steel 15" x 3.5" channel on top of the bulkhead is in very poor condition and completely rusted through in some sections. See the photographs included in this package for further details. This channel helps to tie the top of the bulkhead together and forms the support for the inboard end ofthe wooden piers. The objective of this work is to reinforce the top of the steel bulkhead with a new wood cap system. See the included design schematics for greater detail on the scope of work for this project.
