Renovation of an educational facility in Edmundston, New Brunswick. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.
The project consists of replacing the lower section of the central exterior staircase of the Simon-Larouche building. The exterior central staircase was built in two parts. The upper part is built on the foundations of the building while the lower part is composed of stone pavers installed directly on the ground. This last section being directly on the ground, the paving stones move with the freeze / thaw cycle and in the spring some stones become unstable and therefore dangerous. In addition, the last step at the bottom of the stairs leads directly into the vehicle traffic lane, with no clearance or buffer zone. Pedestrians are therefore at risk of being struck by vehicles. The project consists of reorienting the lower part of the staircase to avoid descending directly into the traffic lane and also to make a new staircase on a concrete foundation to avoid repetitive maintenance of the pavers.
