Update: The Village of Northbrook plans to resurface Walters Avenue in FY 2027 in conjunction with Surface Transportation Program (STP) grant funds the Village has received. As part of the planning for that work the water main on Walters Avenue has been identified for replacement and the Village's Master Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan (MBPP) identifies Walters Avenue for separated bike lanes. An initial review of the bike/pedestrian improvements was conducted and an open house was held in April 2023 for the Public. The PBC has recommended moving forward with Phase I preliminary engineering of conventional bike lanes along the corridor. Preliminary engineering is underway and will be completed in FY 2026 before a determination of what if any bike and pedestrian improvements are included in the final design and scope of the project. As part of the Village's implementation of the Master Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan (MBPP), the Village seeks to implement bicycle facilities on Walters Avenue between Pfingsten Road and Shermer Road. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Commission (PBC) and Village staff engaged a consultant to explore bicycle and pedestrian improvement options along this corridor. An open house was held in April 2023 and feedback was provided. The PBC recommends moving forward with Phase I preliminary engineering of conventional bike lanes along the corridor. The Village will begin Phase 1 design engineering in FY 2024/2025 and complete design engineering in FY 2025/2026. If approved by the Village Board, Construction is scheduled for FY 2027/2028 to coincide with the Walters Avenue rehabilitation project.
