Renovation of an educational facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.
The existing labs will be demolished which includes a reduction of the number of existing fume hoods. To compensate for this reduction there will need to be the addition of more targeted ventilation to exhaust gases and remove heat as required. The instrumentation that will remain are X-ray diffractometer (require its own electrical breaker box), high temperature furnaces of different shape and geometries and different power needs and the vacuum line with multiple 110V supplied pumps. The space will be a general use space which will consist of a mix of teaching, lab prep, and research lab as required to meet departmental needs. These upgrades will ensure that University of Manitoba students have access to modern equipment, tools, and technologies. It will allow the University to continue to build the kinds of spaces that will nurture life-changing ideas, game-changing innovations, and the highest standards of academic success. Finishes, furnishings, equipment, and infrastructure will be brought up to current standards in the effort to provide innovative spaces for University of Manitoba students. The scope includes but is not limited to the following: - Review of each Lab requirements to determine what configuration supports the Lab efficiently as utilized by the faculty. There is a desire to include a "shared" office space that is accessible from each Lab separately and will need to be planned into the space. Discussions regarding room capacity, daily activities and Lab equipment type should also take place. - Demolition of existing fume hoods to reduce the current quantity. Some new fume hoods will be required along with a targeted ventilation system for the exhaust of gases/heat. Replacement of all Lab benching/cabinets Flooring replacement. - Acoustic ceiling tile replacement. - Patching & painting of walls. - Lighting and lighting control replacement. Data & electrical modifications to suit new room layout and AV requirements. - Mechanical upgrades required to suit new plans and lab equipment. - New furniture: Loose Furniture: The requirement for furniture will be minimal. Loose furniture is anticipated to be required for the office location (height adjustable tables), loose chairs as well as stools for use throughout the lab space. U of M will procure furniture (through PO), and this will not need to be included within the construction contract. The UM AES Department has invited architectural firms to submit specific proposals that best illustrate their respective qualifications. It is expected that the prime consultant or members of their team will have experience in the design of post- secondary learning spaces and have knowledge of AV coordination and integration. The prime consulting firm will include architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural engineering services as well as an environmental consultant (for asbestos abatement) within their collaborative team.
