Site work and new construction of a fire / police facility in Newport News, Virginia. Design plans call for the construction of a fire / police facility; and for site work for a fire / police facility.
Constructed in 1958, Fire Station 9 serves the largest population of all Newport News stations, and the annual call volume continues to grow. Fire Station 9 responses increased by 28% from 2019 to 2022. A renovation at this station was completed in 2012 to add ten years of life to the facility. Opportunities for further renovations are limited due to the size of the site and the location of under-slab utilities. Fire Station 9 occupies 3,929 sq. ft. The building is too small, has outlived its expected lifespan, and needs replacement. Funds will be used for a new facility to promote gender equality, ensure legal compliance, maintain safety and dignity for all firefighters, and adapt to evolving social and cultural norms. It represents a commitment to inclusivity and creating a respectful, fair, and welcoming workplace for individuals of all genders. Construction of a new building would take 16-24 months and provide a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified facility that would last until 2098 This project is included in the City's 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of February 13, 2026, project is budgeted for 2028-2029. Project is in design phase. Construction bid expected August 20,2027-September 19, 2027. Due date September 20, 2027. Construction expected October 21, 2027 - June 7, 2029. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
