The Milwaukee trail is Missoula's most heavily used commuter trail. Within the university this trail receives pedestrian traffic similar to vehicle traffic on East Beckwith, and is a primary commuter route. The current width of the trail is not wide enough to support the level of use it receives. Additionally as electric assist devices (E-bikes etc.) become more popular, a wider width is needed to reduce conflict and increase safety. The current trail lights are out-dated, are not dark sky compliant and are not in line with our current standards and knowledge of safe night time public lighting. The City of Missoula and the University recently entered into an interlocal agreement that allows for the City to invest funds into widening the trail through the university. This project will widen the trail from ~10-12' asphalt to 14' asphalt width, and includes uplated trail lighting throughout the corridor. This project is included in the City's 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of November 5, 2024, further information regarding construction and completion timelines have not been identified. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
