The Peter J. Matthews Boardwalk along the central waterfront is one of the city's primary civic spaces a heavily used destination for visitors and residents, and very significant to the city's identity and local economy. The boardwalk was re-decked and extended 22 years ago in 2002. While it appears structurally sound, some of the decking has weathered significantly over the years and an increasing number of boards are warping, flaking, rotting, and causing trip hazards for pedestrians and accessibility challenges. In addition, the boardwalk is inundated by the Merrimack River with increasing frequency and Sea Level Rise will require elevating the boardwalk in the future. An initial feasibility study is being funded by the Community Preservation Act for $75,000 and will be conducted in FY2025. Years 2 and 3 represent design and construction. The City will seek CPA funds for Design and Construction. As of November 12, 2024, this project is included in the City's 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly.
