Background In 1965 concerned citizens located in Modesto's west side formed a pilot committee to assess concerns and issues facing the community and ultimately propose a solution. The committee identified unemployment, lack of education, lack of adequate job training as well as general feelings of apathy, isolation, & despair as the primary issues facing the West Side Community. The primary priority among the recommendations made by the committee was the need for a centralized community meeting space to carryout programming for the community. The City, along with community stake holders, was able to secure federal funding for the construction of this center and on June 6, 1969, the King-Kennedy Memorial Center was officially opened for business. The City of Modesto Parks, Recreation, & Neighborhoods department ran operations of the facility from 1969 until 2008 when it entered into a management agreement with the West Modesto King-Kennedy Collaborative (formerly Stanislaus Multicultural Community Health Coalition West Modesto/King-Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative). This agreement is currently on a month-to-month arrangement until completion of this RFP. The King-Kennedy Memorial Center is in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. This park received a grant to undergo several improvements and additions including a multipurpose room/gymnasium to host sports games and public and private events.
