Site work and paving for a civil project in Mankato, Minnesota. Conceptual plans call for site work for a road / highway; for paving for a road / highway; and water / sewer project.
This project will consist of replacing watermain, sanitary sewer and stormwater utilities. This street is the third phase of the Rita Road Neighborhood Construction Plan. This neighborhood is one of the few remaining without underdrain. The watermain in this area is from the late-1950s and made of cast iron. Cast iron is susceptible to corrosion and rusting over time. The sanitary sewer in this area is from the late-1950s and is made of vitrified clay. Vitrified clay is susceptible to root intrusion and leaks over time. Rita Road Neighborhood Construction Plan. The neighborhood generally consisting of Monks Avenue to Rita Road and Rita Road to Welcome Avenue is considered by staff to be in need of reconstruction. The primary need for reconstruction in this area is due to drainage/grading issues and aging utilities. This neighborhood experiences drainage problems due to a lack of storm sewer and grading challenges in a majority of the neighborhood. Storm sewer is present on the northern portion of Rita Road and the adjacent Monks Avenue. The eastern portion of Rita Road as well as Meadow Lane and Welcome Avenue rely on surface drainage. The current grading of this neighborhood does not allow for surface drainage to reach the storm sewer conveyance system in a large portion of this neighborhood. This neighborhood has cast iron watermain constructed in the late 1950s. The sanitary infrastructure in this area consists of vitrified clay pipe constructed in the late 1950s. It is proposed to reconstruct this neighborhood in several phases. As of May 21, 2025, The project is include in the City's 2025-2029 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change.
