The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has as a goal for 2030 that half of all trips within the community be taken by preferred modes (active transport & public transport). In support of this objective, the RMOW is committed to making significant enhancements to these transportation modes, guided by robust research and strategic planning. For this reason, the RMOW is looking to develop an Active Transportation (AT) Network Plan with support and funding from the Province of BC, as part of their BC Active Transportation Grants Program. TIMELINE: Request for Proposals (RFP) is underway to commission a study and report which will guide the RMOW 2025 AT Network Plan. The aim of this study is to deliver a detailed work plan for the RMOW regarding the development of AT infrastructure and strategies in the coming years, including identified network gaps and opportunities, and suggested designs and strategies to fill them. Whistler has a strong AT network already, connecting its neighbourhoods and points of interest by the Valley Trail network, and boasting a pedestrian only village stroll in both Creekside and Whistler Village. There are yet areas that have been identified as requiring improvement including: Safe and accessible highway crossings; Residential access to bus stops; Seasonal AT infrastructure maintenance; AT network amenities such as lighting; Closure of gaps in the trail network; A broader network for active transportation beyond the Valley Trail, including the identification of appropriate municipal street routes for users such as e-bike riders The deliverables from this study will help the RMOW prioritize specific initiatives and actions to address these and other identified needs, ensuring continued progress toward Whistler's transportation goals.
