Over the next three years, all schools in Nunavik were transferred to us from provincial and federal governments. In 1978, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq became the sole provider of educational services to the people of Nunavik. School board programs are now available in all 14 communities of Nunavik. From kindergarten to grade 2, instruction is provided exclusively in Inuktitut, the mother tongue. English and French are taught as second languages from the third grade, and Inuktitut is taught as a subject until the end of secondary school. The school board currently operates 17 elementary and secondary schools.
