Wake County Momentum is building for one of Wake County’s most popular parks, as the Wake County Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 15, approved the schematic design for the Crowder County Park expansion. This decision paves the way for new trails, new facilities and new opportunities for residents to enjoy the outdoors. “Monday’s approval brings us one step closer to transforming Crowder County Park into a more accessible, expansive natural resource,” said Safiyah Jackson, vice chair, Wake County Board of Commissioners. “This is an investment in our collective well-being — unlocking vibrant new trails, pristine habitats and unforgettable spaces for our families.” The approved Phase I Schematic Design reflects community priorities such as preserving nature, improving access, supporting play and strengthening environmental education. The plan includes: • A signalized pedestrian crossing at Ten-Ten Road. • New natural surface trails. • A bridge over Dutchman’s Branch. • A segment of greenway that will eventually connect to Cary’s greenway system. • A new park center with an indoor classroom and restrooms. • Additional parking. • Public art. Crowder County Park opened in 1998 on land donated by Doris Pierce Crowder in 1992 for public recreation. In July 2019, the County acquired 96 additional acres to expand the park, leading to a new master planning process that kicked off in 2024. Commissioners approved the plan in September 2025 following 14 months of planning and community input. Construction is projected to start in early 2027, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Crowder County Park’s current 33 acres provide outdoor recreational opportunities for all ages — including paved and natural surface trails, boardwalk across a 2.7-acre pond, open play field, sand volleyball court, outdoor amphitheater and three picnic shelters with adjacent playgrounds. In the last year, more than 200,000 people visited the park.
