Description: Manistee County is advancing the long-planned Safer Southern Rail Route, a major freight rail infrastructure initiative that would reroute rail service to the southern end of Manistee Lake. The proposal includes construction of a new causeway-style rail bridge across Manistee Lake, removal of approximately five miles of existing track, elimination of eight rail lines from downtown and residential areas, and reduction of roadway and marine crossings. The project is intended to modernize aging rail infrastructure, improve safety, preserve freight service to major manufacturers, and open up land for future waterfront redevelopment, parks, and trails. The county has secured a $530,000 Federal Railroad Administration planning grant and is seeking an additional $3 million in federal funding to advance engineering, environmental review, and next-phase planning
