BIG RAPIDS – The Big Rapids City Commission approved a resolution awarding the bid for the 2026 street resurfacing projects to Reith-Riley Construction at a cost of $657,480 during its meeting May 11. “We have what I think is a really good paving plan,” City Manager Mark Gifford said. “We are excited about the amount of paving we can get done working with Reith-Riley. We (anticipate) an increase in road funding and this is a good way to put it to work.” Planned paving projects include the following: The 100 and 200 blocks of North Michigan; North Fourth Street to Northend Riverside Park; The parking lot at the new pavilion in Northend Riverside Park; The 800 and 900 blocks of Bjornson Street; Two locations near the hangars at Roben-Hood Airport; The Riverwalk Trail by River Street Park; DeKraft Steet in the Industrial Park; and Linden Street near the Salvation Army. “I don’t know when they (Reith-Riley) will want to do this,” Gifford said. “In our bidding we had it done by the end of October so we are hoping sooner rather than later, but they have a lot of big projects and will fit us in whenever they can. This is really good amount of paving work.” Gifford said that work on Division Street is slated for the 2027 fiscal year, in coordination with water and sewer reconstruction in the area. Potential road closures and traffic disruptions will be announced at the time of the scheduled work.
