In November 2023 voters approved the renewal of a 3/8 cent sales tax. One-third of this sales tax is designated for the Street Improvement Program. This program is dedicated to upgrading and improving older streets with curbs, sidewalks, drainage, lighting. A citizen task force was put together to rank streets based on 7 distinct criteria. The eligible streets are re-evaluated periodically. Eligible streets are normally ditch section streets that lack sidewalks, street lighting, and proper drainage facilities. The improvements normally involve complete removal and replacement of the existing street to include grading, widening, curb, sidewalk/ADA ramps, storm drainage facilities, pavement markings, and LED streetlight luminaires. The SIP projects for 2026-2035 were approved in December 2024 by the Governing Body. The fourth project on the approved list is Ballentine from Johnson Drive to South End (SIP). Design will commence in 2028 with construction to begin in 2029. The improvements involve complete removal and replacement of the existing street to include grading, widening, curb, sidewalk/ADA ramps, storm drainage facilities, pavement markings, and LED streetlight luminaires. Ballentine does not qualify for CDBG or CARS funding, so all funding will be provided through the SIP program. The project is included in the City's 2026-2035 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
