Renovation of a municipal facility in Telluride, Colorado. Completed plans call for the renovation of a municipal facility.
The San Miguel County Parks & Open Space department is requesting estimates from experienced carpenters and builders to implement a 2-phased repair project at the historic Lewis Mill in San Miguel County, Colorado. Phase 1, exterior repairs will include repairs to the front entry ramp, fastening of roof materials, and installation of plexi-glass windows. Phase 2, interior repairs will include repairs to the flooring, and structural items. Background/Historic Summary The old Lewis Mill has stood at 12,450 feet elevation near the head of Bridal Veil Basin for over a century, serving as a vivid reminder of Colorado's high-country mining legacy. Built in 1910, Lewis Mill was a 60-ton capacity ore concentration mill which at its peak could process 12 tons of concentrates each day, and was one element in a mining complex that boasted a mine portal, a triple/tram house, bunkhouse and business office. The five-story structure was originally powered by electricity from the Bridal Veil Falls Powerhouse, and today serves as an outstanding example of timber-frame construction. The Lewis Mill is the only transitional mill in the state to retain its original milling equipment, and is listed on the historic registers for its significance as a distinctive example of engineering and high-country milling technology. The inclusion of the structure on both the Colorado State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in 2009 confirms the historic importance of Lewis Mill. Idarado Mining Co. conveyed ownership of the structure to San Miguel County, the entity currently responsible for the structure's ongoing maintenance and repairs. All recommended and suggested repairs and maintenance practices will utilize the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, which include preservation, restoration, rehabilitation and reconstruction treatments. Historic Preservation experience, especially with mining-related structures, is preferred. San Miguel County reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids or elements of the Request for Proposal. Award of contract shall be based on price, experience, references and ability to perform the work as determined by San Miguel County. Contracts are expected to be awarded within 10 days of proposal submission deadline.
