GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION: The proposed site is located near mile 38 of the Elliott Highway, beyond an existing pullout, outside the DOT right-of-way in an area commonly referred to as Grapefruit Rocks Area (GRA). The Division of Mining, Land, and Water (DMLW) has received a land use permit application from the University of Alaska, in conjunction with the Alaska Alpine Club (AAC), for the construction and establishment of a trail-head outhouse (pit privy) and the installation of a trail-head map, sign, and bulletin board. The request also includes the installation of up to fifteen trail markers demarcating existing trail forks at the Upper Grapefruit Rocks Area (East) and Lower Grapefruit Rocks Area (West). The single pit privy would be constructed and operated in accordance with DEC guidelines for design, operation and closure.
