The Historical Association of Catawba County is requesting Requests for Proposals (RFPs) from licensed general contractors for the purpose of completing a concrete wall and stairs restoration project at the Harper House, 310 N. Center Street in Hickory, NC. The project involves two main components: 1) Removal of the existing rock wall and construction of a new reinforced concrete wall located along the entirety of 3rd Ave. NE (approximately 217 feet); and 2) Stairs/walls/column replacement for the entry stairs from the sidewalk on 3rd Ave. NE to the entry way of the Harper House There are two main components of work for this project: 1. Construct a new reinforced concrete wall for its entirety along 3 rd Ave. NE The final concrete wall will be prepped for replacement stone work that will be completed by another contractor. 2. Rehab the main entrance steps and replace walls as shown on the drawings. Replace posts #7 & #8 with poured-in-place new posts. 1. New Wall (East and West of entrance stairway) Following are the steps to complete the new reinforced concrete wall along 3 rd Ave. NE: 1) Remove the existing rock for reuse and store rock in the designated area shown on the plans. Others will clean the rock and face the new concrete wall with the cleaned rock. 2) Excavate to install the new concrete wall. The excavated material is to be reused to backfill behind the wall. Contractor is responsible forstoring material and backfill on site as shown in the plans. This will be coordinated with the Historical Association. 3) Existing bushes and shrubs are likely to be in the way of the construction. Contractor shall coordinate with the Association to identify the vegetation, remove it and store it for replanting upon completion of the project. 4) For the wall construction, the Contractor shall: i. prepare subgrade for the wall including a construction survey to install wall top at grades shown on the plans; ii. install gravel for footing installation; iii. install wall form, furnish and pour wall according to specs; iv. make test cylinders, have cylinder breaks and furnish test results to project engineer; v. strip concrete forms when concrete is properly set; vi. backfill behind the wall with material from excavation and conduct compaction tests; achieve min 95% standard proctors; vii. furnish and install a grid of #4 rebars in the face of the new wall to support the adherence of existing cleaned rock as shown in the detail on the plans (rock to be installed by another contractor); viii. replant trees or shrubs removed during excavation; ix. replace/repair parts of existing sidewalk that are cracked during construction; and x. remove all construction material and debris. 2. Existing Stairs/Walls/Columns Rehab Following are the steps to complete the stairs/walls/columns rehab work: 1) Replace designated portions of the main entrance stairs following these steps: i. remove designated steps; ii. dispose of materials off site; iii. prepare step subgrade using washed stone to shape/level area; iv. form for new steps v. furnish and install #4 rebar following slope of steps as shown on the plans; and vi. pour concrete according to provided specs. 2) Remove walls between posts #5 & #7 and posts #6 & #8 and replace with new walls, connect the end of each wall to the post using rebars and embedded rebar, remove forms and dispose of. Rub the surface of each exposed step to remove burs, loose surface materials and leave a uniform surface. 3) Posts #7 & #8 are not in alignment vertically and horizontally. Remove posts #7 & #8. 4) Pour in place two new posts to replace posts #7 & #8. Make all ties to new side walls to the new posts using rebar as shown on the plans. Traffic Control Traffic control shall be in place during the construction of the project asshown on the drawings and removed after project is complete Questions about the project should be directed to: Mary George at marygeorge11@att.net Bid date desp- If the proposal is delivered by hand, it shall be delivered to: Historical Association of Catawba County Catawba County Museum of History 30 N.
