At Monday night’s meeting, the council approved the hiring of Shawmut Design and Construction to roll out the preconstruction work in the project. This will pave the way for digging the building’s foundation and a groundbreaking ceremony sometime soon. The cost of the preconstruction is estimated to be about $20 million. According to several online sources, Shawmut appears to have been around since 1982. They got their start in Boston and have grown into a national firm with 11 offices across the U.S. Their Rhode Island branch is in Providence. Shawmut is reportedly 100 percent employee owned through a stock ownership plan, meaning workers share in the company’s success. They employ thousands and make roughly $2 billion in annual revenue. According to job boards, Shawmut isn’t just a builder. They also offer services like construction management, general contracting, and design-build delivery. Along with academic buildings, they’ve also built healthcare and life sciences facilities, corporate interiors, retail and hospitality spaces, and even cultural and historic sites. Besides their experience, the company’s reputation may also have been attractive to the school board. The company has been rated as a good employer in industry surveys like Glassdoor, and according to PRN Newswire, it is known for handling tricky schedules and logistics, which matters for a big public project like a middle school. Over 80 percent of their business also comes from repeat customers. According to Town Manager Ralph Mollis, the design of the building is coming along, too. As of this week, the town is due to hear back from the state education department on the Stage II design. Mollis said he expects the Stage III submission will come shortly after, hopefully by the end of January. According to the North Kingstown School Department, the plan is still for a new building to be constructed on the athletic fields adjacent to the current school. Once it’s complete, the existing middle school will be re-graded and re-purposed for new athletic fields like baseball, softball, and multi-size fields. The design also separates bus traffic and parent/student drop-off traffic to improve safety and traffic flow around the building. Universal accessibility throughout the school has also been a design priority so that it’s easy to navigate for all students and visitors. The school department says that as for the classroom designs, they focus on modern learning styles and safety. The classrooms will be flexible and adaptable, meaning they can support different teaching styles and activities rather than just rows of desks. Natural light will also be prioritized, with lots of windows and daylighting to support a healthy, inviting environment — while still being safe, of course. The proposed building will be built on the existing Wickford Middle School site at 250 Tower Hill Road and provide a modern-day environment that will support 21st century education and will serve generations to come. The New Wickford Middle School will be designed as an energy-efficient building with high levels of indoor environmental quality for students).
